Fortunately, fibroids are rarely cancerous. Less than one percent of fibroids are malignant i.e. uterine sarcoma. Hence, it is important to be evaluated for both the presence of fibroids and to ascertain that it is not in fact malignant in nature. The presence of fibroids DOES NOT always necessitate a hysterectomy. In fact, women who wish to further bear children may elect to have a myomectomy. A myomectomy is the removal of only the fibroid tumor while keeping the remaining uterine anatomy intact. New surgical techniques involving electro-laser cautery (instrument used to make the incision) and “bikini cut incisions” with special plastic surgery like suture closures (as performed by Dr. Rainer) may leave a healed scar hardly recognizable (see insert “healed incision 2mos after surgery”.)
If the possible diagnosis of uterine fibroids concerns you, make an appointment with Dr. Rainer at 718-624-0604 at your earliest convenience.
