Worldwide over 500,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in women annually. But, in the very near future, cervical cancer may be a disease of the past. A recent vaccine breakthrough provides protection against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV is the virus responsible for causing cervical cancer and cervical warts in women. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Nonetheless, the vaccine has been proven effective against both cervical cancer and cervical warts. HPV types 6,11,16,18 (viral types that cause cervical and genital warts) are all targeted by the new vaccine. Naturally, this vaccine provides protection for young women who have not become sexually active and thereby have never been exposed to HPV. Fortunately, some women despite being sexually active, have never been exposed to Human Papilloma Virus. Clearly, these women would benefit from the HPV vaccination. In addition, girls as young as nine years of age may receive the vaccine. Although the need for pap smears may not be completely eliminated in the near future, cervical cancer deaths in women may decline dramatically. If you are interested in possibly receiving the Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination
